Turn Your Backyard Patio Into An Extension Of Your Home

Construction & Contractors Blog

A great way to expand your home and create more space for your family without spending thousands of dollars on renovations is to make use of your backyard patio. By making just a few design changes, you can turn your patio into a natural looking extension of your home that can be enjoyed by the household year round. Implement the following steps to get the job done:

Create Screen Walls

An efficient and cost effective way to turn your outdoor patio into an enclosed home expansion is to have screen installed along the perimeter framing to create walls that will help keep pests, high winds, and heavy rains out. If you experience extreme weather during winter or summer months, it's a good idea to install a ceiling fan and implement a space heater to aid with temperature control throughout the year. These accessories should keep the space comfortable enough to use no matter what temperatures are like outside.

Install a French Patio Door

Replacing your patio's sliding glass door with a French door will provide you with multiple benefits to take advantage of. First and foremost, French patio doors look and perform more like traditional interior doors than sliding doors do. And unlike sliding doors, French patio doors open up all the way, which provides more space and a more open environment that's convenient for things like parties and family gatherings. And when they're closed, your French doors will allow natural sunlight to stream into your home from your new patio room.

If the new patio space will be used as a guest room or home office, you can create some extra privacy by applying insulation window film to the glass on your French patio door. The film comes in a variety of shades, colors, and designs for a customized look – you can even make your French doors look as though they were made with stained glass. Decorate for Lots of Use

Chances are that your new patio room won't be used often if it's not decorated with comfortable furnishings and accessories that give purpose to the space. A great way to make the space inviting is to choose a designation for the new room and then decorate it accordingly. If you want to turn it into a family room, incorporate comfy couches and a bookshelf full of games to enjoy. Turn the space into a breakfast nook by introducing a new table and chair set along with fancy dishes to adorn the table with. You can even use the space as a sunroom and grow vegetables within it during the winter months.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
