Avoid These Drain Clearing Mistakes

Construction & Contractors Blog

As hard as it might be to embrace, homeowners often play the largest role when it comes plumbing malfunctions. This is especially the case when it comes to drain issues. Not only are poor habits often the reason for a clogged drain, failure to exercise caution when trying to remove the clog leads to even further problems. Don't make these mistakes.

Powerful Drain Cleaners

There are tons of advertisements on television for chemical drain cleaners. For this reason, when a clog forms, most people run out and purchase one of these products. Many of these brands use sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide to break down whatever substance is blocking the drain.

The problem is that these chemicals are also corrosive to metals and plastics. If you have galvanized steel, PVC, iron or copper pipes, especially with routine use, you can damage your pipes. This will only lead to increased repair needs. If you must use this method, use a chemical-free, or organic, option.

Plumbing Snakes

Plumbing snakes, technically referred to as a drain auger, is a long, slender metal structure that you force into the drain. The idea is that as you insert more of the snake in the drain and pipe, the pressure will push the clog through until it is removed.

In theory, it makes perfect sense and this is even a method many professionals use. However, the keyword is professional. There is both a wrong and a right way to maneuver an auger through the pipe without causing damage. You also need to know what size auger to use for each different type of pipe. Without this knowledge, it's a wasted effort that could only make matters worse.

Coat Hangers

As crazy as it might sound, yes – people actually stick coat hangers down the drain and there are tons of online tutorials to help people execute this nightmare. Never do this. A coat hanger is not the same as a drain auger. This method presents a number of issues.

First, coat hangers have a sharp edge, unlike an auger. As you force it down the drain, it scratches everything it comes in contact with along the way. Secondly, it can get stuck. If you lose your grip on the hanger or turn it the wrong way it may get stuck in the pipe. Coat hangers are for clothing and that's it.

Plumbing professionals aren't just for emergencies. These skilled professionals can remove clogs efficiently and most importantly, without the risk of damage. They can also provide you with tips on avoiding a clog in the future. Don't overlook their expertise. For more information, contact companies like Hemley's Septic Tank Cleaning.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
