The AC hoses in your car are responsible for carrying refrigerant to the air conditioning system, helping you to stay cool on a hot day. However, over time, these hoses can begin to wear and they may eventually need to be replaced. Here are a few of the signs you or a mechanic will look for when determining whether it is time to replace the air conditioner hoses in your car.
There is a Leak
The number one reason why an AC hose will need to be replaced is because there is a refrigerant leak. In some cases, you can see the actual refrigerant leaking out of the hose. In other cases, you can see the puddle of refrigerant under your car. The lesser known sign of a leak is hearing a small hissing sound coming from the hose. This sound is being made as the gases from refrigerant seep out. In any case, anytime there is an obvious leak, the hose needs to be replaced.
The Hose is Cracked or Fraying
Most AC hoses are made from metal. This helps the refrigerant to stay cool as it travels to your air conditioning unit. However, the metal can begin to crack or fray as it ages. This is simply due to use and being exposed to temperature extremes, such as freezing temperatures and hot temperatures. During an air conditioning systems check, the hoses are inspected for signs of cracking or fraying. While the cracks or fraying may not be deep enough to let refrigerant escape yet, if the hose is not replaced, it can continue to deteriorate until this happens. As such, you want to replace the hose before this occurs.
Condensation Is Building Up on the Outside of a Hose
The last sign that it is time to replace the AC hoses in your car is condensation building up on the outside of your hose. You should never see moisture or water on the outside of the hose. This moisture or water can then drip onto other metal parts in your car, including the engine, and cause rust issues. If your hose has condensation building up on it, it is time to replace it.
If you or a mechanic notice any of these signs, your AC hoses should be replaced. If the hoses are not replaced, refrigerant may leak out of the hoses. Over time, you will notice less cold air being blown into your car, and eventually, may notice no cold air at all. If a hose is replaced timely, you may save yourself from having to refill the refrigerant and from having to drive around in a hot car.

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
