If you have a home that is decades old, then it is likely that you have a concrete septic tank. The concrete was one of the most durable materials to use before the invent of modern polyurethane tanks. Over the years, you concrete septic tank could develop problems like leaks, degraded baffles and loss of structural integrity. Here are some of the problems that you want to be aware of if you have one of these older concrete septic tanks:
1. Leaks and Cracking of Old Septic Tanks
One of the common problems that you may have with an old concrete tank is leaks. This is usually due to cracks that concrete develops over the years. To deal with this problem with your tank, talk with a septic service about retrofitting it with a liner. The cracks can also be repaired, and a sealant sprayed on the walls of the tank to prevent future leaks. If the cracks are too bad, it may be best to have a concrete septic tank removal done and a new polyurethane tank installed for your septic system.
2. Corrosion That Damages Parts Inside Concrete Septic Tanks
Concrete septic tanks can also be damaged by the waste inside the tank, which causes corrosion of materials. It is not uncommon for the baffles inside the tank to deteriorate or completely disappear from the tank due to this corrosion. You may want to get help with repairing and replacing baffles that have been damaged due to corrosion of the concrete inside the tank. Retrofitting the tank with a liner will help prevent this problem with the tank in the future.
3. Structural Integrity of Concrete Septic Tanks and The Hazards
With problems like cracks and corrosion of the concrete in septic tanks, sometimes the structure of the tank can be compromised. It is a good idea to have your tank inspected to see if it is worth repairing. If the structural integrity of the tank is compromised, you will probably need to have a new tank installed. Talk with a septic service about removing the old tank and having a new polyurethane tank installed. The newer polyurethane tanks are more durable than concrete and will not have the same problems as they age.

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
