Construction & Contractors Blog

There are many different things that can cause damage to your home. Gutters are systems that are meant to protect your home from runoff and water damage. They are the source of problems when proper maintenance is not done. To ensure gutters do their part to protect your home from damage, here are some tips that will ensure they are doing their job:

1. Cleaning Your Roof and Gutters to Reduce Wear

Keeping your roof and gutters clean is one of the most important gutter maintenance jobs you need to do. Make sure that debris from trees and roofing does not collect in gutters. If you have trees around your home, it is especially important to keep the leaves off your roof and out of your gutters.

2. Inspecting for Leaks and Wear of Roofing and Gutters

The area near the eaves of your roof are an area that is susceptible to damage and leaks. To ensure that there are no major problems, make sure you check for problems here regularly. The leaks at these areas of your roofs often start with gutter problems. Depending on the type of materials your gutters are made of, it may be due to corrosion and the damaged sections of gutter will need to be replaced when you have repairs done.

3. Installing Gutter Guards to Protect Your Home from Damage

Gutter guards are a great solution if you want to protect your gutters and the eaves of your home. Today, there are various types of guards to choose from for your gutters. The cheapest gutter guards are nothing more than a screen that covers the gutters to keep large debris like leaves out of them. The most expensive gutter guards do more to protect the eaves of your home and are often worth the investment if you live in an area where winter weather and ice dams on your roof are a problem.

4. The Importance of Downspouts and Drainage with Gutters

The problems caused with runoff are not just located on your roof; they may be due to drainage, and cause problems with your foundation. It is important to make sure that your gutters have good downspouts, which should also include a drainage pipe to carry the water away from your foundation safely.  You may want to consider installing dry drainage beds and wells for your water runoff.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
