Taking over the facilities management for a recreation center or something similar means knowing how to take care of all of the features and recreational areas. When it comes to basketball courts, there is little that you'll need to worry about in terms of preventative maintenance. However, although you may not need to worry about much, those few things are important. Here is a look at what you need to know about caring for those courts so that everyone can still play ball.
Keep It Clean
Especially for outdoor basketball courts, you need to be sure that it stays clean. There are all kinds of things that can lead to dirt and clutter, including improper shoes tracking dirt onto the court and falling leaves or other debris. When the court or the leaves are wet, this can lead to mold growth. Further, dirt on the court can be abrasive, damaging the surface.
Avoid this in a couple of ways. First, insist on the use of court shoes for everyone who plays. They will track less onto the court, making it easier to keep it clean. Further, sweep the courts at the end of every day, especially during the fall when leaves are a serious problem.
Deep Clean It Periodically
Deep cleaning the basketball court every year or two will help you to reduce the risk of staining and will eliminate any dirt or particles that may be trapped in fine cracks in the finish. Use a pressure washer to do this, but opt for one with a moderate pressure level so that you don't cause any further damage to the surface. Further, if you can find a warm water washer, that is a great way to break up any staining on the court.
Resurface When Needed
Every few years, you'll want to have the court resurfaced. This process is a bit labor intensive, but the final product is a fresh, new surface for people to play on.
The resurfacing process starts with filling in any cracks in the surface. If there are any severe cracks in the court's surface, they may require the application of a fiberglass patch to cover them. Any low areas in the court also need to be patched to make the whole surface level again. If you see any standing water on the court more than an hour after the end of a rainstorm, that's an indication of low spots that will need this.
After the surface is repaired, an acrylic sealer will be applied. This creates the new surface foundation. That will be covered in a couple of coats of acrylic paint for the final appearance. Once that paint cures, the new lines will be painted to finish your resurfacing project. For more information, contact your local court resurfacing services.

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
