Turning An Old House Into A Dream Home Through Upgrades

Construction & Contractors Blog

Just because your home is old doesn't mean all is lost. With some repair and a few upgrades,  you can add some charm that makes your home look and feel as good as new. The house will continue to appreciate in value when you put significant work into making upgrades where they matter the most.

Making these changes also makes it easier to estimate your future value, in case you are looking to make a sale. Your old house will be transformed and you'll have a lot of equity to show for it.

Take Care of the Hazards and the Infrastructure Before Anything Else

When you have an old house, it most likely has some potential hazards that you must address. With an inspection you'll be able to get to the root of issues like asbestos and cracks in your foundation.

If you have had your roof for more than 20 years, it's also time to look at getting it replaced. Dark streaks might point to underlying algae damage, while cracks may mean that the entire roof is weakened. A home roof replacement will protect the house while also making it look better.

Living with old, faulty plumbing can also become hazardous to both the house and your health. It can cost between $4,000 and $10,000 to re-pipe your house. Figure out which adjustments need to be made and talk to a home repair specialist.

Customize it to Your Liking First -- Think Investment Potential Second

Think about what you like before worrying about what the market likes. While home trends come and go, you'll want to make upgrades that actually improve your quality of life.

What you'll find is that those changes still bring plenty of equity. For instance, upgrading your master bathroom to make it more luxurious makes your living conditions more lavish and relaxing, while still boosting the resale value. Likewise, adding another room to your home is great if you have a growing family, but also strengthens the value.

Work with a home remodeling professional that will help you mix the best of both worlds, so that you aren't having to compromise on what you want out of your home. Bringing an older home into modern times automatically provides value, while also making it a better place to stay.

When you handle these sorts of changes you'll love what your old home turns into. Start researching for more information on the upgrades that will count the most.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
