About Your Well Water And Testing The Water

Construction & Contractors Blog

When you are on city water, you won't have to deal with the testing side of things because it will be handled by the city. However, when your home's water is from your well, then you do need a water testing company to test your well water and ensure that it is safe. Many people assume that you don't need to worry about the quality of the water as much if you just drink bottled water. However, you will still be using the well water for things like bathing and brushing your teeth. This is why you always want to make sure you know that your well water is clean and safe. Here, learn more about how contaminates can affect your water.

What types of things can be in the water?

There are a lot of different types of contaminants that can make their way into your well water. Just some of these can include:

1. High coliform levels — Coliform bacteria microbes come from many sources. It is in the digestive systems of animals, in surface water, in soil, etc. Although these types of microbes don't normally make people sick, they can be difficult to discern from other microbes that will make you sick. This is why you should determine the total levels in the water. If the level is shown to be high, then there is an increased chance that there are viruses and bacteria in the water that can make you sick.

2. Fecal bacteria — Although many types of bacteria have the potential to make you ill, fecal bacteria tend to bother people the most. This is the bacteria that comes from the digestive system and feces and eventually can make someone sick with E. coli.

3. Nitrate – Nitrate itself isn't automatically a scary thing since it occurs naturally in a lot of different foods. However, higher levels of certain types of nitrate found in water can make people sick. This nitrate can come from decaying plants, flooded sewers, wastewater, runoff water from agricultural sites, and much more.

What happens when contaminants are in the water?

Your most obvious and serious concern will be to make sure there aren't contaminants in the water that can make your family sick. However, other things can happen when there are certain contaminants in the water: contaminants making their way into the food that you grow on your land, and causing damage to the pipes and other plumbing elements that are in your home. Having a company test your well water lets you know if there are concerns with your water that you need to have it treated to keep it healthy.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
