4 Roofing Repair Tricks To Know As A Homeowner

Construction & Contractors Blog

As a homeowner, it can be helpful to have a little knowledge about how to repair and take care of your roof. Your roof protects your entire home and being able to fix and repair simple issues with your roof can be a really big asset. It is important to understand the issues you can handle on your own, and when you need to bring in support.

Trick #1: Always Wear Shoes with Good Traction

If you are going to get up on your roof to do some repairs, you don't want to get up on your roof in just any pair of shoes. You should only get up on your roof on shoes that provide you with good traction. Rubber-soled shoes with good traction are usually the best option.

Trick #2: Straighten Out Curling Shingles

If you have any shingles that are curled up, you can straighten them out. If the shingle is a little bit brittle, use a heat gun to warm up the shingle before you try to straighten it up. The heat gun will make the shingle more pliable and thus easier to work with.

Once you flatten out the shingle, use some caulking or roofing adhesive to attach the edges of the shingle to the roof. This should keep the shingle in place and allow you to get a little more usage out of it.

Trick #3: Fill in Around Your Flashing

Your flashing is one of the more sensitive parts of your roof. If you replace the flashing, or if you need to reattach the flashing to your roof, pay special attention to how the flashing attaches to the roofing joints. Use roofing cement to secure the flashing to your roof, specifically around the roofing joints.

Trick #4: Use Roofing Cement to Seal Things Up

Roofing cement can be a great way to fix up issues with your roof. If you have any seams on your roof that seem like they are worn out, apply some roofing cement to keep the seam-sealed up.

You can also use roofing cement to seal up various other areas of your roof as well. You can use roofing cement around vents on your roof to keep the area around the vents waterproof. You can use roofing cement to seal up around your chimney. You can also use roofing cement to seal up around things such as skylights.

When it comes to fixing up your roof, you should leave major repairs to the experts. If you work or inspect your roof on your own, be sure to wear shoes with good traction. You can use a heat gun to warp up warp tiles and straighten them out, before securing them in place with caulking. Roofing cement is great for sealing up cracks and around objects like vents and chimneys on your roof.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
