The slope of your home's roof will have a bearing on how quickly water moves down the roofing materials and drips onto the ground. Without an operable gutter system in place, water that pools could loosen the soil around the base of your home, contributing to soil erosion or inadequate nutrients being supplied to the soil that surrounds vegetation. Choose a gutter system set up that is complementary to your home's facade and that will disperse water to preferred areas.
1. Complementary Systems
Gutter specialists may suggest using a seamless or a seamed system that provides a direct route from the top edge of your roof to the surface of the ground. Many modern homes feature gutter systems that contain downspouts that are placed along exterior walls that do not interfere with the siding or trim that is located along the front of a home.
After inspecting your home's exterior and determining the best area to install a gutter system, an installer will coordinate the color and shape of the pieces so that the lineup of the gutter sections and downspout will not affect the beauty of your home.
If the front of your home is going to be an ideal location for a gutter system, there are ways to conceal gutter pieces or aid with blending them in with the materials that your home is constructed of. Seamless gutter systems may only contain two or three main parts and seamed systems will contain a series of pieces that are designed to attach together. Vines or lush shrubs that are planted around a downspout will conceal metal pieces. The greenery will benefit by receiving water whenever it rains.
2. Designs That Aid Conservation
Gravel or small pebbles and stones can be used to prevent puddling near the end of the downspout, but on tracts of lands where drainage is poor, these materials may not do enough to ward off water accumulation. A gutter specialist may suggest using a streamlined downspout system that is routed toward a pond or the edge of your property. With this type of design, water will be transported to areas in need of water.
Another idea is to use a rain barrel as a collection device that can be used for the storage of water. The gutter sections that are located above the barrel will transport water in the same manner as a system that contains a downspout. After water falls through the opening at the end of the gutter system, it will drip into the barrel. The water that is collected can be used to water your lawn or garden.

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
