Make Window Replacement More Affordable Without Sacrificing Quality

Construction & Contractors Blog

Do you need new windows, but feel apprehensive every time you look at the prices? Good replacement windows are not cheap, but there's no need to over-pay, either. Here are some ways to make window replacement more affordable without sacrificing the quality of your windows.

1. Have your windows replaced at the end of the year.

The best time of year to have your windows replaced, from a financial perspective, is the fall. At this time of year, many of the window companies are trying to get rid of the windows from the previous year's stock. There's nothing wrong with these windows, but they are about to be an outdated model, which means they'll often be sold at a discount. Make sure your window replacement company knows you prefer last year's model. They may even be able to point you towards additional rebates and savings on the windows through the manufacturer.

2. See if there are some windows you can leave.

Homeowners often assume they have to replace all of the windows in their home. And indeed, this is usually a good idea, since it means all of your windows will match, and since it will prevent you from having to call the window replacement company again in a few years. However, if you're on a tight budget, it may be worth having your window company look over all of your windows and point out any that are not in current need of replacement. Leaving these windows in place can save you hundreds of dollars, if not more. Sure, you may need to replace them in four or five more years, but this buys you time to save up some additional funds before you do so.

3. Choose white window frames and sashes.

It can be tempting to choose those beautiful navy blue window frames or the bright, pine green sashes. But if your budget is quite tight, you can save by steering away from those colors and towards plain white. Most window companies sell their white windows for a little less than their bright colors. And there's nothing wrong with white windows! They're classic, and they have a nice, fresh look. There are other ways to bring color into your home, such as with window treatments.

If your budget is a bit tight but you really need to replace your windows, there are ways to do it affordably — but without settling for low-quality windows. Stick with white, only replace the windows that are actually damaged, and wait until fall.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
