Adding a Retractable Screen to Your Home

Construction & Contractors Blog

Making it more comfortable to spend time outdoors can be a practical way of improving your property. Retractable screens can be an upgrade that will protect you from a variety of pests that can often make it unpleasant to be outdoors during certain times of the year while still allowing you to remove the screens during times when pests are not a major concern.

Will Retracting the Screen Be Cumbersome?

Retractable screens are typically heavily automated, and this will allow them to be easily and conveniently controlled by the homeowner. When using these systems, the screens will be controlled by a series of motors that can raise or lower them at will. To power these systems, the screens will need to be connected to a power source. Yet, this does not mean that they will always have to be connected to the home's wiring due to the option of using solar panels to provide the minimal power that these systems will require to operate.

Are Retractable Screens More Easily Damaged?

The process of raising and lowering the retractable screens can lead to the assumption that they will be more easily damaged as a result of this use. Luckily, the screens will be made of a thicker mess than many stationary screens, which will allow them to better withstand the stresses that can be encountered when the screen is being raised and lowered. Furthermore, these screens are typically made of an extremely durable composite rubber or vinyl that will have enough flexibility to easily accommodate these movements.

What if Your Property Does Not Have a Porch?

The porch of the house is the most common area to have a retractable screen system installed. If your home does not have a full porch, you may still be able to benefit from this system by installing an awning. The retractable screens can be attached to the awning system so that you have a comfortable area to spend time outside without having to worry about pests bothering you or spending the money and suffering the disruptions that building a full porch addition would involve for your property.

Retractable screen systems can be an affordable and practical upgrade to make to almost any house. Knowing that these screens can be made to be automated, that they use durable materials that are resistant to tearing and that they can be installed on most awning systems rather than strictly on full porches.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
