Red Flags That Indicate That Your Septic Tank Drainfield Is In Need Of Repair

Construction & Contractors Blog

When a septic system is in good condition, it provides a very efficient waste management system for both liquid and solid waste. However, over time it is possible for a septic system to suffer wear and tear that will need to be repaired by a professional. One component of the septic system that can develop issues is the drainfield. A septic drainfield consists of a series of tubes or pipes that transports liquid waste. If there is a failure in the drainfield, it is important to address the problem promptly in order to ensure that liquid waste is being filtered properly and moved away from your property. Some of the red flags that indicate that your septic tank drainfield is in need of repair include the following.

Foul Odors in the Vicinity of the Drainfield

A septic tank drainfield works by transporting liquid waste and slowly filtering it through aggregate and soil. When a drainfield is working properly, you will not notice anything at all. If one or more pipes in your septic tank drainfield crack or burst, the untreated liquid waste won't be filtered. When this happens, you may begin to notice the foul smell of liquid sewage around the drainfield. As a homeowner with a septic system, it is in your best interest to know where the drainfield is located and inspect the area on a regular basis.

Unexplained Puddles or Soggy Grass/Soil

Other things to look out for when you have a septic system are unexplained puddles or areas of soggy grass or soil where the drainfield is located. If you notice either of these things, it most likely means that one or more of the drainfield pipes is leaking and needs to be repaired. Don't brush off unexplained moisture around the drainfield — you are much better off calling a professional to inspect the drainfield and make the necessary repairs.

Slow Drainage in Your Home

The pipes in a septic tank drainfield can crack, but it is also possible for them to develop clogs. When this occurs, liquid waste will not be able to flow properly from the septic tank into the drainfield. As a result, toilets and sink drains inside the house may begin having draining issues, such as slow draining. If you notice that there are draining issues throughout your home, the problem most likely lies with the septic system. Have the septic tank drainfield inspected to see if there are clogged pipes that can be repaired by a professional.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
