Adding a Covered Deck to Your Property

Construction & Contractors Blog

Upgrading your home by adding a deck is an upgrade that can significantly improve your quality of life. Yet, a deck is not as simple as it may seem at first, and you will want to be as thoughtful as possible throughout the process of preparing the designs and constructing a covered deck.

Review the Amount of Space Your Deck Will Need

The amount of space that you will need from the deck is one of the first decisions that you will have to make. In addition to considering the various items that you will want to have on the deck, including grills, furniture and decorations, you should also consider the number of individuals that will be on the deck at any given time. This information should be some of the first that you consider as you work to have a design for your deck created.

Install a Railing System Around the Deck

A railing system around the deck can be an important safety feature even in situations where your deck may only be elevated by a few inches. This is due to the risk of individuals tripping off the edge and potentially suffering an injury. The addition of railing is an affordable safety upgrade that can help to make the deck a more enjoyable place to be while also reducing the liabilities that you can face for injuries that occur to those that are actively using the deck.

When choosing a railing system, you may want to opt for vinyl or metal systems as these will be better capable of withstanding prolonged exposure to the elements than wood. In fact, wood railings may need to be replaced or undergo substantial repairs every few years for those that live in areas that experience intense rainfall.

Consider the Benefits of a Covered Deck

Unfortunately, the deck of the home may not be an enjoyable place to be during times when the sun is extremely intense or it is raining or snowing. Having a covering for the deck can make it possible for you to continue using the deck when the weather may not be ideal for it. Luckily, you do not have to choose to have a deck's cover permanently installed as there is the option of having a retractable cover put in place. These covers can be conveniently moved into the covered or closed position so that you can provide the right type of setting for yourself and your family.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
