Preparation Tips For Refinishing Your Hardwood Floors

Construction & Contractors Blog

Do you have hardwood floors in your home that are looking dull? Thankfully, you can revitalize your hardwood floors at any time by refinishing them. When finished, your floors will look just as if they were brand new again. Here are some preparation tips for refinishing your hard floors so that the job is done right.

Check The Flooring For Damage

One thing to keep in mind is that hardwood floor refinishing is not going to fix all of your problems. If you have pieces of wood flooring that are actually damaged, you'll need to replace them before you start the refinishing process. They'll then blend seamlessly into the floor when refinishing is complete. Now is the time to get rid of those pieces that have big gouges in them or major water damage.

Remove The Moldings

It is always a good idea to remove all of the moldings around your rooms before you start refinishing the floors. These moldings are likely to become damaged by the sanding equipment, so removing them will keep them in great condition to be put back on the floors. If you leave them in place, you'll likely need to replace or repair them when they get bumped by the sander.

Secure Loose Boards

You also want to take this opportunity to secure all loose or noisy floorboards. You can drive some more finishing nails into the wood, and then punch the nail beneath the surface of the floor. Go around and look for other nails that are sticking up and hammer those further into the floor so that they do not damage the sanding equipment

Fill Holes In The Floor

Do you have holes in the floor that you've always wanted to fix? Smooth these out by putting some latex wood putty into them, then allow the putty to dry according to the directions. These spots will eventually blend in with the flooring when finished.

Seal Off Rooms

Sanding your hardwood floors can create a lot of dust, even when using dustless equipment that doesn't seem to contain it all. That's why it is worth sealing off rooms with plastic so that all the dust doesn't escape to those other rooms. Just tape a piece of plastic over the doorway so that it hangs down to the floor.

These tips should hopefully assist with making the rest of the refinishing process goes smoothly. Contact a wood floor refinishing service for more information.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
