Letting More Light In With A Bathroom Remodel

Construction & Contractors Blog

More natural light in your bathroom doesn't just reduce the amount of artificial light you need. It can also help to create a fresh, open, and relaxing atmosphere in your bathroom. Here are some options to add to your bathroom remodel if you want more natural light in the room than your windows can provide.

1. Skylights

Skylights are a great way to get more light into a room without letting the neighbors accidentally see in. This means they can be useful for places such as bathrooms where you really want privacy. For even more privacy, you can choose a skylight made of frosted glass or of glass blocks.

A skylight can help deliver a lot of natural light to one spot, so if you always find yourself using the electric lights in the shower or at the sink, consider placing the skylight there.

2. Solar tubes

Solar tubes are an alternative to skylights that you can use in places where installing a skylight isn't convenient or even possible. For instance, if your bathroom is on the bottom story of a 2-story house, you may still be able to use a solar tube to bring light from the roof to your bathroom.

Solar tubes are also less expensive to buy and install than skylights, and take up less space on your ceiling. The main downside is they don't provide the great window to the sky that skylights do.

3. Glass walls or floors

Even if you have plenty of natural light coming into your bathroom, an opaque shower enclosure could block the light and bring back a need for electrical lighting. Glass shower enclosures (either premade or built of glass blocks) can let natural light all the way into the shower.

You can also use glass blocks for any other dividing walls in the bathroom, such as an enclosure around the sink area. And although they're not as common, glass block floors can also be used (in some circumstances) to help increase your natural lighting.

4. Mirrors

While mirrors typically don't actually bring more light into the room, they reflect a high percentage of light and hardly absorb any. This means that when you have a lot of mirrors in an area, you'll have more light to go around. Mirrors are useful in the bathroom anyway, so this is a great place to make use of their reflective properties to enhance light levels.

These are some of the possibilities you can choose from when you're planning a remodel and want more natural light into your bathroom. Get in touch with a local remodeling contractor today to learn more.

Leaking Roofs and Roof Repairs

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
