No matter what look you want in flooring, you can probably find it in vinyl. Vinyl flooring can be basic and affordable or more expensive luxury flooring that looks like wood or stone. Here are some of the different types of vinyl flooring.
Budget Vinyl
Budget vinyl is a good choice when you need affordable flooring. You can buy basic vinyl peel-and-stick tile flooring in a variety of colors and patterns. Since the tiles are installed by peeling off the back layer and sticking the tile to the subfloor or old flooring, you can install the floor yourself and save a lot of money on your new floor.
Luxury Vinyl
Luxury vinyl flooring is popular since it comes in planks that look like hardwood or tiles that look like stone. Luxury vinyl planks and tiles are also thicker, more durable, and have more cushioning on the backs. Luxury vinyl is of a higher quality, and it's also a more expensive option in vinyl flooring.
Tiles
Vinyl tiles are a good match for kitchens and bathrooms. The tiles come in different sizes and can be installed in different ways. Besides peel-and-stick, vinyl tiles can be glued down or installed with grout for a realistic stone look.
Sheets
Sheet vinyl is difficult for DIY installation since the sheets come in large rolls that are hard to handle. However, this type of flooring is a good choice for wet areas since there are no seams for water to leak through. Sheets can be loose lay or installed with glue.
Planks
You can buy vinyl planks in a number of colors and wood grain patterns that replicate the look of different species of wood. You can also buy waterproof planks so you can have wood-look flooring in your bathroom or kitchen. Planks can be loose lay, they can be glued down, or you can click them to each other and float the planks over the old floor below.
No-Wax Vinyl
You can choose no-wax vinyl that stays shiny without the need to wax or polish. You could also choose more expensive vinyl flooring that also stays shiny without waxing but that has a wear layer made of urethane or enhanced urethane. Vinyl flooring with the highest-quality wear layer is the most durable, but it also costs more.
Foam-Backed Vinyl
Vinyl planks are usually made with a backing layer of material such as foam or cork that comes in different thicknesses. The backing acts as a vapor barrier so you won't have to install a separate barrier before installing the floor. The backing also acts as padding for comfort and to make the flooring quieter.

My name is Debbie Greenberg. I’m a single woman who owns her home, and like most homeowners I dread home repairs. I’m not very handy with do-it-yourself projects around the house. I can do a few minor repairs when necessary, but for the most part I have to call in a professional. Last year I had a leak in my roof. When it rained, water would leak into my kitchen. What appeared to be a simple fix turned out to be anything but simple. It took over four months to finally identify the problem, and double the money I was initially quoted to fix it. The problem ended up being that the flat part of my roof didn't have shingles, but a sheeting material. I learned a bit about home roofs along the way, and that is what I want to share with you.
